When eleven-year-old Jackie meets every kid’s greatest nightmare–disfigured hermit Charlie No Face–his life is changed forever. Despite nagging questions about the death of his mother when he was an infant, the summer of 1959 is shaping up as the best vacation of Jackie’s short life. He has friends, baseball, his father’s unanticipated vacation from work, and the hunt for Charlie No Face to fill his days. But in a few short weeks, Jackie’s life is turned upside down. He moves in with a distant relative whose shadowy boarder holds the key to Jackie’s past and, perhaps, his future. Who is this man who won’t go out in the light of day but who roams the woods at night? Could it be? Charlie No Face is a coming-of-age story in which a misunderstood recluse and a young boy redeem each other’s lives through a most unlikely friendship.

As a frequent business traveler for more than 10 years I have grown very fond of reading, it is a great way to help pass time when waiting in airports, flying on planes or sitting in a boring hotel room. While I truly enjoy a good book, after the first few years it didn't take too long to burn through everything written by my favorite Authors which has left me searching the rows in book stores, on line options and Kindle suggestions.Last week, I got very lucky, I found Charlie No Face!
Written by David B. Seaburn the books an enchanting and heartfelt coming of age story about a boy named Jackie and the most unforgettable summer of his young life. Having read what I what I would consider a large number of books in my life my personal top 5 includes, literary classics as well as some modern day thrillers. It now includes the story of a young boy dealing with some common boyhood issues along with issues that are forced into his young life through events beyond his control.
After reading this book don't know of anyone who could not relate to young Jackie's life, and his struggles to make sense of the events that take place in the summer of his 11th year. I know I am reading a great book when the Author can make me laugh out loud or turn away from the passenger sitting next to me so they won't see the tears that flowed non-stop as Jackie learned about how his mother gave her life so he could have his. If you liked Steven King's Stand by Me, you will love Charlie No Face!
I would like to thank David Seaburn for this rare gift that can only be delivered when someone like him takes the time to bring a story like this to life. While I am sad to reach the last 50 pages of this book the Author wrapped up the story in a way that will forever hold its place in the top 5 books I have ever read!

I am half way thru and it is a good book. Also read THE LAST PERFECT SUMMER. They just seem to go together.
Young boys, baseball, summer and family! A nice story about young boys becoming of age. The author did a good job on the story line when it comes to boys. Funny, intriguing and tears, a good heart warming read!!
I grew up in the area where "Charlie" lived that is the main reason I read this book. Learned a lot of things I hadn't known about him but also brought up many memories. I enjoyed this book.
As a person who reads somtimes eight to ten books a month I found myself getting bored with the same old "Who done it" formulas and then I found Charlie No Face. This compelling story has to be one of the best books I have read in the last ten years. A one of a kind read where you find yourself lost in the emotions of this coming of age classic. If your are looking for a great read and one you can also share with your teen aged kids; Charlie No Face is your book!
In the interest of full disclosure the author is married to my first cousin. Having said that, I loved reading Charlie No Face. I grew up in Western Pennsylvania and actually saw Charlie No Face aka The Green Man when I was young. My mother also had a picture of him. Dave's book captures life growing up as a young boy in Ellwood City a Western PA steel town and where we both lived. It wonderfully captures the simple joys of pegging your life to the rhythm's and randomness of the baseball season, the frailties exposed when confronting the complexities of coming of age and the moral dilemmas that eventually confront us all. What I liked best about the book was how the threads that were woven throughout came together at the end in a heartwarming and instructive conclusion. Well done Cuz!
This is a beautiful story of coming of age in a small mill town. I loved the way the author captured the trials and tribulations and emotions of growing up in the late 50's and all that entailed. I found it to be a wonderful look into human nature, both the cruelty and compassion we humans can impart, overcoming adversity, accepting the cards we are dealt and making the most of our life no matter what. While the book started out as a book about the lives and friendship of 2 young boys, it became evident that it was about much more of a story of a young boy finding himself and and realizing what is really important in life.
Charlie No Face is a heartwarming story that is wonderfully told by author David B. Seaburn. The character development and the relationships vital to the story, blossom and grow beautifully as the story unfolds. The writer's voice is quiet and gentle, leaves you laughing in places and crying in others. The variety of relationships between 11 year old Jackie and his father, his best friend, his Aunt Dee and Charlie are woven together beautifully in this coming of age story. Witnessing Jackie take a giant step toward becoming a man of character is truly touching. The result of this weaving is a tapestry of valuable life lessons adorned with the healing power of love and acceptance. To quote Jackie's Aunt Dee (page 143), "...the important things aren't sitting around on the surface. They're way down deep, way down deep where you can't see unless you really look. And I don't mean looking with your eyes. I mean looking with your heart. Sometimes your best eyes are in your heart. Sometimes you can only see something, really see it, if you feel it in your heart what that person's life must look like. Then nothing else matters about them-how they look, what others say about them-nothing except what your heart sees." Truly words we should all live by.
